Let's talk about going green

Jess Henshall

If you’re a fan of the Archie’s lifestyle, there’s a chance you’re already looking for ways to reduce  your waste and become more sustainable. But even if you haven’t thought about it yet, why not start now?

Plastic seems to be dominating the world - everything comes in some sort of plastic packaging, and that plastic doesn’t disappear, instead it lives on in a landfill damaging our environment. In some of cases it’s unavoidable, but there are easy switches we can all make to reduce our impact on waste production, here are our 5 ideas on how you can reduce your waste.

1. Refills

Did you know that we provide refills for your laundry liquid, washing up liquid, fabric conditioner and hand soaps? Just bring your empty container into either of our stores and have it refilled - it’s cheaper than buying a whole new container too, and doesn’t create more plastic, so you can help the environment and your wallet.

2. Reusable takeaway cups and bags

In the UK we throw away more than 2.5 BILLION takeaway cups a year - that’s about 10,000 every 2 minutes. At Archie’s we hate this extreme waste, and make sure that all of our takeaway cups and containers are completely compostable (we use Vegware), but we still much prefer reusable cups. Keep Cup is a favourite eco reusable cup of ours, as they’re extremely reliable and come in so many fabulous colours, so you can do good and look good at the same time. As with plastic coffee cups, plastic bags take hundreds of years to break down. We love our cotton and jute Archie’s bags, and pride ourselves on the fact that we don’t offer plastic bags to our customers.

3. Bamboo toothbrush

When you think about the amount of plastic toothbrushes that are being thrown away each year, it doesn't take much to make you want to switch to an eco friendly version. Bamboo toothbrushes are a brilliant option, as they’re as effective as a replacement for regular toothbrushes, but don’t harm the environment.

4. Packaging free products

Something that’s easy to forget about is the packaging that comes on small things like bars of soap and bread. We sell Faith in Nature soaps which are packaging free, natural, and smell amazing. Here at Archie’s we also stock sourdough bread from local bakeries, which come straight from the oven to us, so no packaging in involved in the process. If you opt for non-sliced varieties too, then you can avoid plastic packaging all together, but still have a beautifully fresh loaf to enjoy.

5. Moon cups

Eco friendly and very cost effective, Moon Cups are a perfect waste-free alternative to sanitary products, such as tampons. As a one off purchase, these cups are completely waste free, and come with raving reviews from lots of our staff members, so are definitely worth considering.
